Keep safe this boating season
19 October 2009

A family wearing life jackets enjoying a fishing trip on the bayThe peak boating season is fast approaching and Marine Safety Victoria would like to remind Victoria’s boating public to follow key boating safety requirements over the coming months.

Many boats are likely to have been in storage over winter, so it is vital that a maintenance check is carried out before heading back onto the water.
Boat structure must be in good condition, check for cracks or leaks, ensure your motor has been serviced, battery charged and navigational lights are installed and in working order.

Make sure you have the necessary safety equipment on board, including but not limited to:
    • Life jackets
    • Orange and red flares
    • A waterproof buoyant torch that can be seen at night or day by way of reflection
    • A registered 406MHz EPIRB
    • A mobile phone and/or a marine radio (VHF or 27MHz)
    • Reflective tape that can be used on life jackets and other boating equipment
One of the leading factors in boating deaths is entry into the water unexpectedly, so the critical must do’s to ensure your safety are:
    • Tell someone where you are going and what time to expect you back
    • Check that your safety equipment is in working condition
    • Always wear your lifejacket
    • Be aware of your location on the water at all times
    • Be visible. Ensure that life jackets have reflective tape on them, as the reflection can help catch the attention of other boaters or search and rescue groups in emergencies.
Following these safety measures will help you in case of an emergency on the water.

Keep boating safety as a priority and enjoy your time on the water over the coming summer months.
